The Validation Problem Every Entrepreneur Faces

You know that feeling when you have what feels like a million-dollar idea?

You're lying in bed at 2 AM, mind racing with possibilities. "This is it," you think. "This is the one that's going to change everything."

So you do what any reasonable person would do - you start building it. Or maybe you ask around for validation first. Your friends think it's great! Your family is supportive! Even that random person on Reddit said it sounded cool!

Six months later, you're staring at something nobody wants to buy.

Sound familiar? Yeah, you’re not the only one. 

The problem isn't that you had a bad idea. Most validation methods are like bad lovers - they tell you what you want to hear instead of what you need to know.

Why Most Validation Methods Are Lying to You

Let's be honest about the classic validation approaches:

  • Asking friends and family: They're emotionally invested in supporting you, not giving honest market feedback. Personal relationships create bias that skews results. They'll tell you what they think you want to hear, not what the market actually needs.

  • ChatGPT and generic AI tools: They're programmed to be encouraging cheerleaders, not brutal business advisors. These tools are basically that friend who says "you can do anything!" when what you really need is someone to tell you your idea has holes. They can't distinguish between "interesting concept" and "viable business" because they're designed to be supportive, not realistic about market dynamics.

  • Online surveys: Hypothetical questions produce hypothetical answers. People consistently overestimate their likelihood to purchase when there's no real commitment required. Survey responses are free to give, so they don't reflect actual buying behavior.

  • Market research reports: These show market size, not market opportunity for your specific solution. Knowing that the productivity software market is worth billions doesn't tell you if anyone wants your particular approach to solving the problem.

  • Building an MVP: Once you've invested time and resources into development, you're no longer validating - you're hoping. The sunk cost fallacy kicks in, making it harder to objectively assess whether people actually want what you've built.

What you need is validation that actually predicts whether people will hand over their hard-earned money. And that requires a completely different approach.

Manual Validation: The Old-School (But Effective) Way

Before we dive into AI tools, let's talk about manual validation methods that actually work. These take more effort, but they give you real insights.

Method 1: The Problem-First Interview

Stop leading with your solution. Start with the problem.

Instead of: "Would you use an app that tracks your daily habits?" 

Ask: "What's the most frustrating part of trying to build new habits?"

Instead of: "Do you like this feature?" 

Ask: "Walk me through how you handled this last week."

Let people tell you about their world first. You might discover they don't actually have the problem you think they have.

Method 2: The Money Trail Test

Follow the money. If people aren't currently spending money trying to solve this problem, they probably won't spend money on your solution either.

Look for:

  • Terrible existing solutions people pay for anyway

  • Time-consuming workarounds people have created

  • Adjacent products they're using to solve related problems

If you can't find evidence of people spending money on this problem area, that's a red flag.

Method 3: The Pre-Sale Reality Check

This is the ultimate validation test: Can you get people to give you money before you build anything?

Create a simple landing page describing your solution and see if people will:

  • Join a waitlist

  • Pre-order

  • Pay for early access

  • Refer their friends

If you can't generate interest in the idea of your solution, the actual product won't magically be more appealing.

Method 4: The "Hair on Fire" Test

Your solution should feel like a fire extinguisher to someone whose hair is on fire.

Good sign: "OMG when can I get this? This would save me hours every week!" 

Bad sign: "That's neat. I might try it sometime."

Lukewarm responses kill businesses. You want people interrupting you to ask when they can buy it.

Manual validation works, but it's time-consuming and requires specific skills. This is where AI should be on the top of the game, right?

ChatGPT: The Validation Method That's Too Nice for Its Own Good

Let's talk about the elephant in the room. You've probably asked ChatGPT about your business idea. We all have.

Here's what typically happens:

You: "What do you think about my app that connects dog owners with people who want to pet dogs for stress relief?"

ChatGPT: "This is a fascinating and innovative concept! What a unique approach to wellness and pet sharing! There could definitely be a market for this type of service..."

[Hint: it isn’t, and we’re pretty sure there couldn’t.]

The Sycophantic Problem

ChatGPT has a massive validation problem: it's programmed to be encouraging. It's like having a cheerleader instead of a business advisor.

Why this happens:

  • ChatGPT is trained to be helpful and positive

  • It avoids being discouraging or negative

  • It doesn't understand real market dynamics

  • It can't tell the difference between "cool idea" and "profitable business"

Real example: We asked ChatGPT about the idea above: "I'm planning to start a business where people can rent pets for stress relief. The idea is to connect individuals who are feeling overwhelmed with local pet owners. What do you think?" ChatGPT's response? Pure enthusiasm! It called the idea "interesting and emotionally intelligent," started mapping out business models, and was ready to help me build the whole thing.

ChatGPT's encouraging responses can create a false sense of validation. Entrepreneurs get excited, start building, and only discover the underlying problems months later when they're a few months and thousands of dollars in, trying to find customers.
